A school bus arrives at Calhoun High School, this time without its usual teenage passengers, but with 8 year olds from Calhoun Elementary School. These little visitors make it down the halls to Mrs. Judy Peterson’s Science Lab, for a learning adventure, Called Junior Academy of Science.

A rotation of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes from the elementary school will travel to the High School periodically throughout the year. On the first visit, Ms. Patricia Waters’ future scientists perch with legs dangling from lab stools. The properties of matter, (solids, liquids and gasses) were discussed. Safety goggles brought about giggles and laboratory experiments allowed the students to experience cold with liquid nitrogen. “This is a fun and informative way for young people to experience science, and it is one of the most exciting experiences of my teaching career.”, said Mrs. Peterson. High school students also assist with the lab work.

Mrs. Peterson is also very flexible and adjusts her Jr. Academy presentations to coordinate with different science concepts that may be taught at CES. The elementary teachers are thrilled to have a chance for their little students to experience science in a high school environment. And the high school students have a good time working with the third graders. Mrs. Peterson truly enjoys working with the little ones, because “it’s a positive learning experience for all involved.”
