The Calhoun High Senior Beta Club attended the 70th annual Georgia Senior Beta Convention at the Atlanta Hyatt Regency on January 19 and 20. Sponsor Terry Bennett and driver/chaperones Ruben Maldonado and Randy Rice were highly impressed with the nine CHS Jackets' competitive drive, exhibition of class under pressure and very fulfilling efforts at their first-ever convention. The highlight of the trip was the success of the quiz team. The CHS Beta quiz team tied for fifth in a field of 54 schools in this field. Calhoun secured victories over Villa Rica, North Gwinnett, Union Grove and Lowndes. Eventual champion Parkview High defeated Calhoun and Baconton Community Charter School in the third round. Captain of the team was Anthony Molla and his teammates included Graves Ethridge, Richard Huie, J.B. Box and Michael Butler. Chapter President Molla accepted recognition from the state convention for the clubs donation of 35 packages and postage to Operation Christmas Child. Other competitors at this meeting were: Stephanie Gibson in small group talent; Britt Gallman in banner design; Catherina Cordero in the mathematics exam; and Kathleen Edwards in the social studies exam. The National Senior Beta Convention will be held at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville from June 20-23. The National Beta Club is America's largest youth service agency on high school campuses and currently registers 614,000 members.
