Back to School Enrollment
As Calhoun City Schools opened its doors for a new school year, the system was prepared for the slight increase in enrollment. Last year in August we had an enrollment of 3,220 students. At the close of the school year there were approximately 3,247 students and we anticipated that this number would increase by two percent during the 2007-2008 school year. Day fourteen of the school year has seen an enrollment of 3,294 students. During the past week, numbers have fluctuated so we’re still seeing some changes at each school. It’s difficult to always predict what the enrollment will be from year to year.
We certainly try to be aware of overall class size changes and community issues that might reflect changes in enrollment. We reduced the regular education teaching staff by one teacher at the primary and middle school which meant we just didn’t hire for those openings due to retirements. We added an additional fourth and fifth grade teacher at Calhoun Elementary School where we have seen an increase in their student enrollment with larger overall classes. The high school has also seen some growth in overall student class numbers for ninth through twelfth grades. Additional teachers were hired to support this growth and the changes in high school class size requirements. Schools continue to be creative with classroom and facility space as our enrollments rise but we feel that we’ve settled in quite nicely to the new school year. We anticipate that we will continue to see changes in enrollment through the middle of October.
