Sarah Joyave, Dana Higgins and Sally Peterson
Dana Higgins and Sara Joyave have been nominated by the CHS school administration for the 2008 National Beta Scholarship competition. Ten seniors submitted applications for this process and the attributes and accomplishments of these scholars made selection very difficult. Dana and Sara are now eligible for the national scholarship review; the top Beta scholarship will be $20,000. Over 200 students will earn at least $1,000 from a total purse of $400,000. Congratulations, and good luck, Dana and Sara.
Calhoun High has qualified to honor its first John W. Harris Leadership recipient. The 2008 Harris nominee from Calhoun High is Sally Peterson. She is the first Yellow Jacket to serve as a Senior Beta Club officer for two years. Harris nominees stem from Junior and Senior Beta clubs from the seventeen states with chapters. The central theme for this year's award is "Leadership Through Service Builds Character." Students selected for this honor should demonstrate strong academic achievement, service to school and community and character traits outlined in the Beta Club Creed. The 25 national Harris winners will be announced in April of 2008.
CHS Beta Club seniors will have another scholarship opportunity at the state convention in Atlanta in January when the annual state scholarship test will be administered. Calhoun can enter one competitor from its senior ranks for every ten CHS members who attend the state meeting. Other academic competitions will include the quiz bowl, public speaking, mathematics, history, English and science tests and a spelling bee. Students who place in the top three in the academic and artistic rounds at state will earn travel stipends to compete in the national finals at the National Beta Convention in Myrtle Beach in June.
