From meager beginnings the Calhoun High School recycling program has grown. The Calhoun High School Interact club started a school wide recycling program four years ago. Mounds of used and discarded paper was going to waste when it could have been recycled and reused. Recognizing this need, club advisor, Marcus Palazzolo, began a recycling program. Art classes assisted by decorating donated barrels for waste paper and plastic bottles. Interact club members were responsible for getting the word out, collecting the recyclables and taking them to the recycling facilities.
“The faculty and staff jumped on board right away and started saving their recyclables for collection, and things have grown from there. The other schools, and the Central Office recently found out we had a recycling program at the high school and they wanted to be a part as well. So we have had to expand our collection pick ups, but this extra work is a good thing.” The Interact club is proud that their baby steps toward helping our environment have grown to a system-wide
endeavor. “Our recycling program reinforces that our students are to be good stewards of our planet, and that they can make a difference. It is also encouraging for students to see that their efforts are appreciated and that their good deeds have been recognized and supported by faculty, staff and administrators.” Membership in the Interact Club is open to all grade levels and has grown every year. Care for the environment is one of the Interact clubs major areas of focus. They have also volunteered for Rivers Alive for the past four years. This year the club is now 109 members strong.
