Meet Mrs. West
Hello, my name is Shelly West and I am honored to serve as a 3rd grade teacher at Calhoun Elementary School.  This is my 11th year teaching, all of which have been here at CES.  I grew up in Fort Payne, AL always dreaming of becoming a teacher.  After graduating from Fort Payne High School, I went on to Berry College where I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education.  I began teaching 4th grade at Calhoun Elementary School in the fall of 2001 and moved to teaching 3rd grade in the fall of 2003.  I furthered my education by earning my Master of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Piedmont College in 2004 and my Education Specialist degree in Leadership & Administration from Lincoln Memorial University in 2007.  Just this past year, I added my K-5 Math Endorsement which I earned through NWGA RESA.  In addition to my teaching duties at CES, I also serve as a co-sponsor for FCA with Jason Hawkins, Jerry Pruett, and Steven Waters.

I have been happily married for the past 9 years to my wonderful husband, Shelby West.  We have two beautiful daughters, Lily and Lyla, both of whom are enrolled in the Calhoun City School System.  Go Jackets!  We also have two dogs who are a big part of our family: Lil’ Ann (Border Collie mix) and Piper (Long-haired dachshund).  In my spare time, I enjoy reading, exercising, Atlanta Braves baseball (Go Braves!), Auburn Tigers football (War Eagle!), and spending time with my family and friends.

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to teach and to learn together with your child this year!  I believe that we the students, parents, and teachers are a team.  Communication is vital is making our team successful, so please feel free to contact me at anytime or come by for a visit – my door is always open!

Class Introduction
I have the pleasure of teaching math, science, and social studies at Calhoun Elementary School.  My teammate, Keri Robbins, will be teaching reading, language arts, and writing.  In math, we will use the Workshop Model which allows students to use learning and performance tasks to become active problem solvers while making real-world connections.  They will learn that the process of finding an answer is just as important as the solution itself.  Students will build on their addition, subtraction, multiplication, geometry, and measurement skills, and will be introduced to division concepts as well.  Mastering multiplication facts is a very important goal for 3rd graders, so this will be worked on throughout the year.  In science, we will conduct investigations to learn more about rocks, minerals, soils, fossils, magnets, heat, resources, and plants & animals of Georgia.  We will take a fun, yet educational, field trip to the Tellus Museum that students won’t want to miss!  In Social Studies, we will be learning about the levels and branches of our government and key Americans who helped shape our society today such as, Paul Revere, Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, to name a few.  It’s going to be an exciting and fun year of learning together!
