RESA Academic Bowl February 9, 2008

Calhoun High School will enter the state RESA academic bowl finals in Bogart on February 9 after ending its NWGA region slate with a second-place finish at the region playoffs. Sixteen teams met on Monday, January 14, 2008 to decide the priority of placements into the state tourney. Calhoun opened the afternoon with victories over Bremen and Cartersville at the Sara Hightower Regional Library in Rome. The finals saw Ringgold's junior varsity capture the first place trophy and Calhoun ended its run as second place. CHS earned RESA trophies for capturing the regular season championship for the central subregion and for second place in the region tourney. The season record thus far is 11 wins and two losses.

Our varsity was not quite as fortunate. They faced the Bremen senior team and were leading up until the second half and lost by a 150 point margin. CHS' varsity team ends the season with a 6-5 mark and with a seventh place ranking among nineteen schools in the region. Calhoun High received a team trophy for finishing as the #2 team in the central subregion. The top five varsity and junior varsity teams will compete at North Oconee in the state finals; CHS could send its varsity squad if two regional teams ranked above them withdraw from the slate.

Over eighty teams are expected at the state tournament which begins with a written placement test for all entrants at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, February 9. 2008 marks the first year that GA RESA has sponsored a formal junior varsity state tournament. Several members of the academic team will compete in the state Beta Club quiz team rounds during the state convention this weekend, plus CHS has been invited to the Berry Invitational on 1/26 and the Alpha Lambda Delta tournament at Piedmont

RESA Bowl Update - Tuesday, December 04, 2007

Calhoun High School’s Junior Varsity RESA Bowl team secured first place for the season in a 610-470 victory over the visiting Darlington School squad on Monday afternoon. Calhoun now must face Armuchee is a double set of games on Thursday afternoon with the Indians serving as hosts. With the victory, CHS is set to become the Central Subregion chamption and will enter the region quarterfinals in Rome in January with a sterling record of yielding only one defeat to Rome High. Only eight teams (two from four subregions) will enter the January finals. The top five members of each flight (JV and Varsity) will earn berths in the state RESA finals at North Oconee High School in Watkinsville on February 9.

The Yellow Jacket Varsity squad supplied great effort but lost in a tight match to Darlington by the final tote of 270-330. The CHS squad also travels to Armuchee on Thursday afternoon and is locked into a tie with Darlington with four losses. Based on tournament rules, Calhoun would not get the nod for the region playoffs since CHS lost both Darlington matches this season. After all region scores and standings are tabulated on December 10, Lynne Reese from the NWGA RESA will announce playoff brackets and seedinds for the quarterfinals.

RESA Bowl Update - Thursday, November 15, 2007

With three matches to play before Christmas, the Calhoun High School 20067 RESA Bowl team finds itself in very good shape. The junior varsity is leading the six teams in the central division and the varsity squad is holding second place with a slim one-half game lead over Gordon Central and Darlington School. Region coordinator Lynne Reese notified team coach Terry Bennett this week that the Pioneer RESA will host the state junior varsity and varsity finals on Saturday, February 9 at North Oconee High School. Each RESA around the state can send the top five junior varsity and varsity teams to the state finals.

NWGA RESA is divided into four regions for this year’s teams. The top two junior varsity and varsity teams will be invited to the sudden death playoff rounds in Rome in January. Surprisingly, the state RESA committee has reversed policy and will now offer a junior varsity state championship along with the varsity finals. To summarize, CHS would need to win its first match in the January playoffs to qualify for top five status. CHS faces Armuchee at home on November 26 and Darlington School at home on Monday, December 3. Matches will begin near 4:00 p.m.

Shorter College Academic Bowl - Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Calhoun High demonstrated a very strong presence in the first annual Shorter College Academic Bowl in Rome on Tuesday, March 16. Team coach Terry Bennett and chaperone/driver Coach Ruben Maldonado were very impressed with the range of the students' knowledge in various academic and pop culture fields. The older team (Calhoun Team A) placed second in the field of ten with an impressive 8-1 record. The sole loss was to eventual champion Pepperell B. The sophomore team (CHS B) placed fourth in the field and was in a deadlock for first place after six of the nine rounds were completed. The third CHS contingent (Team C) won three matches in its slate of nine; this fete is quite remarkable since this program has traveled to several out of town matches an returned with zero wins. Clifford Lance was recognized as the top JV player in the entire field and the #5 scorer for both JV and Varsity teams. Graves Ethridge was recognized as the #4 individual scorer while senior captain Anthony Molla, sophomore Gail Smith and junior Michael Butler all placed in the top ten. In a field of 48 total competitors, CHS placed five students in the top nine spots.

Calhoun High will hit the road on Monday, October 22 to face RESA competitor Darlington School in the fourth week of the NWGA 2007 RESA Bowl. CHS currently holds first place in its region for the JV ranks and is in a tie for second place in the Varsity level.
