This year I will be teaching 5th grade reading and language arts. In fifth grade, students expand and deepen the concepts, skills, and strategies they have learned in earlier grades. We will be reading texts from a variety of genres including: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Students will write daily in a variety of genres including: narrative, informational writing, and persuasive. Both reading and language arts will be taught using the reading/writing workshop model. This is a way of teaching these subjects in a student-centered manner enabling students to engage individually, with partners, or in small groups while they read, write, and learn.
