Calhoun High School will enter the state RESA academic bowl finals in Bogart on February 9 after ending its NWGA region slate with a second-place finish at the region playoffs. Sixteen teams met on Monday, January 14, 2008 to decide the priority of placements into the state tourney. Calhoun opened the afternoon with victories over Bremen and Cartersville at the Sara Hightower Regional Library in Rome. The finals saw Ringgold's junior varsity capture the first place trophy and Calhoun ended its run as second place. CHS earned RESA trophies for capturing the regular season championship for the central subregion and for second place in the region tourney. The season record thus far is 11 wins and two losses.
Our varsity was not quite as fortunate. They faced the Bremen senior team and were leading up until the second half and lost by a 150 point margin. CHS varsity team ends the season with a 6-5 mark and with a seventh place ranking among nineteen schools in the region. Calhoun High received a team trophy for finishing as the #2 team in the central subregion. The top five varsity and junior varsity teams will compete at North Oconee in the state finals; CHS could send its varsity squad if two regional teams ranked above them withdraw from the slate.
Over eighty teams are expected at the state tournament which begins with a written placement test for all entrants at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, February 9. 2008 marks the first year that GA RESA has sponsored a formal junior varsity state tournament. Several members of the academic team will compete in the state Beta Club quiz team rounds during the state convention this weekend, plus CHS has been invited to the Berry Invitational on 1/26 and the Alpha Lambda Delta tournament at Piedmont College on February 16. Next, CHS will send a team to the SC/GA Southern Stingray Regionals of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl in Columbia on 2/23, the Georgia Academic Teams Association (GATA) varsity finals in Cochran on 3/15 and the GATA junior varsity finals at Ola High School on 4/19.
Tonight's junior varsity squad included: captain Clifford Lance, Gail Smith, Brett Walraven, LeAnne Reagin, Walter DeGuire, and Ava Langford. The central subregion runner-up varsity trophy went to: captain Anthony Molla, Graves Ethridge, Richard Huie, Richard Faulkner, Zack Budzius and Michael Butler. The Jackets are coached by Terry Bennett.

CHs Beta/National Service Award
The Clahoun High School chapter of the National Senior Beta Club was honored this past Friday with the National Service Award to chapters in lieu of its work with our local elderly population. For the past two years, CHS has co-sponsored the Gordon County/Calhoun Senior Citizens prom along with the Senior Beta chapter from Sonoraville High School. This even is held each spring at the senior citizens center and features "prom" pictures, food, beverage, and live music.
In its 75th year of service, the National Beta Club will hold national convention in Orlando in June of 2009 and the Georgia State Convention will meet in Atlanta in Feburary 2009. Haley Cronan from our chapter will run for state secretary and CHS will complete in a dozen events ranging from talent quiz team to art finals.
The new junior and sophomore members that were invited into our chapter this fall will have their formal initiation on Monday night, September 15 at the Calhoun First Methodist Church.
