Meet Mrs. Bledsoe
It’ll be nice to get back to work and actually interact with real people!  I spend my summers gardening and canning which I love.  But, squash aren’t great conversationalists.  I’m eager to meet your students and start an adventurous year.

Calhoun is such a small town that I’m sure we’ve run into each other at least once.  Still, here’s some more about me.  First and foremost, I LOVE my job!  I had other career plans, but a former teacher of mine asked me to be a long-term substitute and after a few weeks I knew I’d found my niche.  I haven’t looked back since.  I believe that an excellent education is the key to every student’s future.  Education benefits us personally, benefits our local community, our country, and our world.  Our minds are a terrible thing to waste.  I very much agree with Ben Franklin – “The only thing more expensive than education is ignorance.”

Let me finish introducing myself with some more personal trivia.  I am married to Tim Pridemore.  He is Emergency Management Specialist at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  He spends his days thinking of all the bad things that could happen and planning how deal with them.  I have three children.  Lauren is off to UTC this year.  Noah is a senior at CHS.  Ian is in 8th grade at CMS.  They won’t let me say anymore about them.  We also have pets – drum roll please.  Smokey Joe is a blue merle Border Collie and single smartest dog I have ever met.  Boomer is a Basset Hound with lots of goofy charm and a bark you can hear in the next county.  Zinnia is a snow white house cat who keeps us mouse free.   Outside we have the SCRAP patrol cats Leon and Jake.  They take care of the squirrels, ‘coons, rats, and possums, hence the name SCRAP.   I just wish they’d add fox to their list.  We currently have a well-fed fox roaming around.

I don’t know that I have hobbies, but I do stay busy.  We have a small farm.  I have about 25 laying hens.  Tim occasionally raises a few pigs to provide sausage, bacon, chops, you get the picture.  Our garden provides most of our vegetables which I can, freeze, or dry.  The kids act kind of embarrassed by all this husbandry, but secretly enjoy all the fresh veggies.  Dare I admit that I have a facebook page?  It’s a wonderful tool for keeping up with friends and family.   I hope to set up a class page, once I figure that one out!  When I can find the time and don’t fall asleep, I love to read.  I especially enjoy history and science fiction. Of course, I read lots of gardening books and magazines.  I also read with the goal of finding exciting and interesting reading choices for my students.  There’s lots of good stuff to read our there!

Class Introduction
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way….”  Charles Dickens

If I didn’t know better, I’d say Dickens was describing the 8th grade.  As we read this year, we will be exploring how authors see the world and how we often share the same vision.  We will be using our readings as models to develop our writing skills.  My goal is for all students  not only to appreciate the power of reading and writing well, but to love doing their best in both.  Naturally, we’ll be prepping for two key 8th grade assessments – Middle Grades Writing Assessment and the CRCT in Reading and Language Arts.  My goal is to let the students know how the test works and to provide the information they need to succeed.  I try to blend this into the course, so it’s not all about test prep.  I truly believe that if we focus on the skills for reading and writing well and master them, the CRCT will be a breeze.

Georgia Studies lets me indulge in my love of history and current events.  There’s lots of history out there, so be looking for your student to read and study vocabulary every night.  I want every student to come to appreciate the forces that shaped modern Georgia.  Only by knowing the past, can we shape the future.   Consider what Aldous Huxley, author of Brave New World,  has said, “The charm of history and its enigmatic lesson consist in the fact that, from age to age, nothing changes and yet everything is completely different.”  Plus, I want my students to feel the joy that comes with exceeding on the CRCT!

Education
I graduated from Carson-Newman College with a B.A. in Philosophy and English, and a concentration in creative writing.  I earned an M.Ed. in Middle Grades from Georgia Southern.  My certification covers lots of territory – English (6-12); Middle Grades (4-8), Language Arts, Reading, and Social Science; Reading Endorsement (6-12); and Gifted Endorsement.  I’ve also participated in many staff development opportunities – far too numerous to list here.

At Vidalia High School I taught English and public speaking, at Perry Middle School I taught English and one lonely math class, at Oxbow High School I taught English literature and drama.  I’ve been at CMS for the past 13 years.  (Uh-oh it’s that number!  We’ll explore this motif later.)  Currently I teach 8th grade English/Language Arts and Georgia Studies.
