Meet Mrs. Edwards
Welcome to Kindergarten!  I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. I am married to Al Edwards and have lived in Calhoun all of my life. I have three daughters and a son-in-law. Laura is a 5th grade teacher at Calhoun Elementary School and is married to Josh Long. Carrie lives in Atlanta and works for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Emily is a freshman at the University of Georgia. I began my school career at Peter Pan Kindergarten and I graduated from Calhoun High School. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Georgia. GO DAWGS!  I earned my Master’s degree from Berry College and completed my Educational Specialist degree from the University of West Georgia. I also have my Gifted Educators endorsement.  In 2010, I was selected by my peers as Calhoun Primary Teacher of the Year and was awarded the honor of Calhoun City Schools Teacher of the Year. I have been teaching for twenty-two years. Before teaching kindergarten, I was a fourth grade teacher for seven years. This is my sixteenth year teaching kindergarten.  Besides spending time with family and friends, I enjoy reading, traveling, scrapbooking and cheering on the Calhoun Yellow Jackets and the Georgia Bulldogs.  Again, I am really looking forward to working with you and your child this year, and getting to know each and every one of you.  Please feel free to contact me at school anytime with questions or concerns.

Class Introduction
Kindergarten is a journey, not a race!  Your child will have the entire year to master the standards assessed through GKIDS, which is an ongoing assessment. Georgia Performance Standards drive the instruction for kindergarten. You will be updated on your child’s progress through report cards every nine weeks. If your child needs help in a particular area, progress reports will be sent out mid-tem. Students will be taught reading through flexible groups, so your child may go to another teacher for the subject. This is also true for intervention time. This makes learning more individualized and can be used for remediation or enrichment. Math and writing will be taught within the homeroom class. Science and social studies are embedded in the curriculum.
