The "Backpack Buddies" program targets children who may not be fed or have access to food at home over the weekend. On Fridays a bag of food that does not require any adult supervision to eat is sent home in the child's backpack. This school year 27 children are already enrolled and more are expected to be added as children are identified and referred by teachers.
Items collected included juice boxes, cereal bars, crackers, individual soups, spaghetti and meatballs, etc. that require little or no adult assistance to eat. Were it not for these donations these children would probably go hungry for the weekend.
Todd Harrison of Gordon Hospital is shown helping Amanda Schutz, School Social Worker, unload a truckload of backpack goodies.
