The Calhoun softball team was well represented at the in the end of the year All-State Awards. Lady Jacket Christine Olney led the way as a First Team All-State honoree. She was followed by Bre Johnson, Maddie Monroe and Karavin Dew, who all received Second Team All-State honors.
Olney, a junior, hit .571 which was ranked among the highest in the state. She also compiled a .619 on-base percentage with 22 extra base hits and 19 RBIs. Olney, who missed the postseason with a torn ACL, was the only player in the extended area to make First Team. She also made All-State last year.
"There is no doubt in my mind that if we had had Christine in the postseason we would have advanced to Columbus," said softball head coach Diane Smith. "She can run, field, throw and bat with a degree of talent that not many girls possess."
Bre Johnson, a junior, batted .400 with six homers and a greater Rome leading 53 RBIs. She compiled a .766 slugging percentage. She hit .455 with three homers in the post season. Johnson also earned Second Team All-State honors last year while playing at Southeast Whitfield.
"Bre is an outstanding and consistent force to our batting order," said Smith. "She also did a great job playing a new position (SS instead of 3B and catcher which she played at Southeast) for us."
Maddie Monroe, a junior, went 13-3 with a .40 ERA after joining the Lady Jackets late in the season. Monroe, who transferred from Dalton High, struck out 176 batters in 104 innings. She also batted .357 with 11 RBIs. "Our season really turned around for us when she transferred," said Smith. "She escalated the attitudes of the entire team."
Karavin Dew, a junior, batted .459 with seven homers (including six in the post season) and 25 RBIs to gain her second consecutive All-State selection. Dew was named by the Rome News-Tribune as a co-player of the year and captain to the All-Area team. Dew was a First Team All-State honoree last year. "As a defensive catcher, Karavin is one of the best in the state," said Smith. "Her arm is without parallel and passed balls were null and void in our games."
