Saturday, January 5th was the first Saturday School session this year with an all time record 131 students attending. Average attendance is around 80 to 90 students. Students are issued invitations based upon their need for additional instruction, but anyone is welcome to attend. There is a wide variety of students who participate ranging from those in great need of extra help, to straight "A" and gifted students who come just because they enjoy it.
"Students were all excited to be here and I can’t tell you how many ‘Man, that was fun!’ comments I heard as the children were going home. The awesome team of Jason Hawkins and Leslie Harrison planned a perfect and fun filled day and thanks go to all who were here helping out. Fourth grade had the best attendance, followed by 3rd and finished out by 5th. We are looking forward to another great week this coming Saturday!" Principal Michelle Knight reported.
Saturday school started in 2003 under the guidance of Dr. Michele Taylor and Jason Shriner. There were 17 students that first day and numbers have steadily risen to the outstanding attendance of this Saturday. As a culminating celebration, there is a Saturday School Carnival for those who choose to participate in the program. Calhoun Elementary School is very proud of the success of this program.
