Calhoun Middle School raises $4196.48 for Relay for Life

CMS special education paraprofessional, Jessica Guess, was overwhelmed by the hard work and generosity of Calhoun Middle School’s students. Jessica’s son Logan is a cancer survivor and when she shared that with the CMS students and explained about Relay for Life that started the ripple that became a tidal wave of giving. Raising funds became lots of fun. The students held a hat and dress down day; they had an afternoon dance; and then, thanks to the wonderful people at Longhorn, they had a very successful pancake breakfast. Students pre sold tickets and 30 middle schoolers turned out to work at the breakfast at 7:00 AM on a Saturday morning. They did everything from greeting, preparing, serving and bussing tables. Jessica’s 7 year old daughter, Maggie, raised $100 by herself in honor of her brother.
Ms Guess expressed her feelings this way, "I really can’t thank everyone that helped enough. When the students realized how close to home cancer was and that they knew someone that had a child, close to their own age who was a cancer survivor, they just jumped in and helped as much as they could. I am so proud of and grateful for each one of them."

From February through March students also were collecting donations for the March of Dimes.  According to Brandy Howard nearly $1200 was collected during a coin drive in each room.  It goes to show  you that those pennies do add up. There were other fund raising activities as well, and a total of $2403.69 was raised for March of Dimes for healthy babies.
The Calhoun Middle School yellow jackets have shown that they are a very  caring group of young people.
