Jacket Jamboree said ALOHA to Summer!
After an exciting 2017-2018 school year, Calhoun Community Education recently kicked off the start to Jacket Jamboree, which is an engaging summer camp series that focuses on providing children K-6th with a multitude of opportunities to travel, discover, create, think, learn, laugh, and grow throughout the summer. As with recent years, the camp has continued to grow and seek new opportunities to engage the students both on campus and throughout the Greater Calhoun-Gordon County Area. During week 1, campers said ALOHA to summer with an action packed week. Activities included making leis, grass skirts, beach ball dodge ball, volleyball, ships and sailors, capture the pineapple, and much more. The camp also focused on several aspects of character and soft-skill development, with Dr. Lisa Drake leading several engaging character development activities.
After receiving positive feedback from parents and campers last year, Jacket Jamboree “flew” through week two with a focus Space and Aviation. Calhoun City Schools has a strong desire to consistently provide all children with STEM related activities, which further prepares for the future. Campers had a “blast” with parachute games, a trip to the Tom B. David Airport in Calhoun, Georgia, an adventure at the Sunrise Planetarium, a laser maze, and many more enjoyable games and crafts. Jacket Jamboree also enjoyed a movie at the GEM theatre and will do so throughout the summer every Thursday.
The next few weeks at Jacket Jamboree will also be very exciting. Week three will give campers the opportunity to explore their wild side, with a focus on nature and the outdoors. Campers will enjoy kayaking, a visit to the Calhoun Recreation Department, an adventure at Salacoa Park, scavenger hunts, and many opportunities for several crafts. Week four will focus primarily on STEM related activities, allowing students to release their inner scientist through explorative activities that focus on building, engineering, science, technology, and more. Jacket Jamboree will also be on the road that week, with a trip to the Rock Garden at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the GEM, and the Campus STEM lab. Now is the time to consider sending your child to Jacket Jamboree and allowing them to grow, explore, and enjoy the golden days of summer. Remember, summer break lasts two months; however, memories last a lifetime.
