School Counseling

Welcome to guidance and counseling at Calhoun Elementary!

The Calhoun Elementary School Counseling Program, in conjunction with other stakeholders, strives to inspire all students to acquire the educational, occupational, and social/emotional competencies necessary to become lifelong learners in the pursuit of excellence.

Our program standards are provided by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) and Mindsets and Behaviors for College and Career Readiness. These standards are delivered through classroom lessons, small group interventions, and brief individual interventions. Through these delivery models, we strive to provide students with the skills to be successful in school, college and their chosen career. In addition to the school counselor, CES also has a school-based clinician to help support students by providing counseling services and supporting the school's counseling program.

In addition to counseling services, our school social worker helps to ensure families have the knowledge and resources necessary to help their children be successful at school. In conjunction with counselors, nurses, and family engagement coordinators to assist students and families experiencing difficulties in a variety of areas. The school social worker offers direct service and assistance to students and families in crisis situations. They monitor attendance and make referrals to appropriate agencies when students have excessive absences. The school social worker acts as a liasion between home, school, and community. They enhance the district's ability to meet its academic mission, especially where home, school, and community collaboration is key to achieving student success.

The goals of the counseling program are determined by our school improvement plan and student date. We review and revise the goals annually to best serve student and school needs. Our current goals are as follows:

  • To reduce the number of discipline referrals in the current school year and to reduce the number of students with discipline referrals.

  • To increase the percentage of students meeting or exceeding their individual literacy goals.

  • To reduce the number of students with ten or more absences in the current school year.

  • To provide students with the exposure needed to prepare them to be college/career ready.
