CELA School Counseling
The Calhoun Early Learning Academy Counseling Program, in conjunction with other stakeholders, strives to inspire all students to acquire the educational, occupational, and social/emotional competencies necessary to become lifelong learners in the pursuit of excellence.
Our program standards are provided by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) Mindsets and Behaviors for College and Career Readiness. We deliver these standards through monthly classroom lessons, small group interventions, and brief individual interventions. Through this delivery model, we strive to provide students with the skills to be successful in school, college, and their chosen career.
Classroom Guidance Lessons: Guidance is one of the classes in the Kindergarten Specials' rotation. Guidance is a Tier 1 intervention. All students benefit from the lessons taught in guidance, as it serves as the preventative side of counseling. Lessons are designed to prepare students with skills to be successful in their 21st Century College or Career Path. Topics include appropriate school behavior, friendship skills, problem solving, critical thinking, study skills and career skills. Guidance lessons are taught by Ms. Kandi Johnson (paraprofessional) or Ms. Heidi Allen.
Small Groups: Just as we provide interventions for reading and math, we also provide interventions for behavior skills. Small groups help students develop the behavior skills necessary to be successful in school. Students are identified for small groups based on academic data (test scores, benchmarks, etc.) and teacher referrals. Small groups build skills for academic and social success, but are not therapeutic in nature. Small group topics will focus on understanding and managing emotions, feeling and showing empathy for others, and establishing and maintaining positive relationships, as well as other topics as need arises.
Individual Interventions: Although school counselors provide individual assistance for students, they do not provide therapeutic services. Students who are struggling with an issue that is impacting success at school may be seen for brief individual counseling. Counselors are available to consult with parents and provide referral information for therapeutic counseling if necessary.
School Social Work Services: School Social Workers help to ensure that families have the knowledge and resources necessary to help their children be successful at school. They work in conjunction with Counselors, Nurses, and Family Engagement Coordinators to assist students and families experiencing difficulties in a variety of areas. The School Social Worker offers direct service and assistance to students and families in crisis situations. They monitor attendance and make referrals to appropriate agencies when students have excessive absences. School Social Workers act as a liaison between home, school, and community. They enhance the district's ability to meet its academic mission, especially where home, school, and community collaboration is key to achieving student success. Abigail Ayers serves as the school social worker for the CELA, CPS, and CES.
Program Goals: Counseling program goals are determined by our grant requirements (the federal Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Program grant), our school improvement plan, and student data. We review and revise our goals annually to best serve student and school needs. Our current goals may be summarized as the following:
To reduce the number of discipline referrals in the current school year and to reduce the number of students with multiple discipline referrals.
To increase the percentage of students meeting or exceeding their individual literacy goals.
To reduce the number of students with ten or more absences in the current school year.
