Calhoun Elementary School is proud to announce Mr. Zach Mendence as the 2026-2027 Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Mendence is currently in his 22nd year in education and his second year at Calhoun Elementary School, where he teaches 4th-grade Math, Science, and Social Studies. In addition to the classroom, he also serves as coach of the Calhoun Middle School Boys JV Basketball team.
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Maryville College and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Curriculum from Walden University. Mr. Mendence is certified in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Mathematics, and Middle Grades Science and Social Studies.
Mr. Mendence is married to Andrea Mendence, and together they have two children, Giuliana and Grayson.
Colleagues describe Mr. Mendence as a passionate, student-focused educator who goes above and beyond to make learning engaging, meaningful, and memorable. He is known for building strong relationships with students while maintaining high expectations and creating a structured environment where students thrive. His creativity, dedication, and ability to connect with students both academically and personally make a lasting impact throughout the school community.

Calhoun Elementary School is proud to announce Mrs. Tarah Gallman as the 2026-2027 Staff Member of the Year.
Mrs. Gallman is currently in her fourth year in education and her second year at Calhoun Elementary School, where she supports 5th-grade ELA and 6th-grade Social Studies classes.
She is currently working toward earning her Special Education degree from Western Governors University.
Tarah is married to Kenny Gallman, and together they have two children, Tucker and Laina.
Colleagues describe Tarah as a caring, hardworking, and dependable team member who consistently goes above and beyond for students and staff. She is known for building strong relationships with students, creating a supportive learning environment, and stepping in wherever needed with a positive attitude and servant’s heart. Her dedication to students, strong work ethic, and willingness to help others make her an invaluable part of the CES community.
