
Calhoun Primary School is proud to announce Mrs. Mardee Burton as the 2026-2027 Teacher of the Year.
Mrs. Burton is currently in her 11th year in education and serves as a special education teacher at Calhoun Primary School. She has also previously taught 3rd grade in general education.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Western Governors University and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of West Georgia. She also holds ESOL and Dyslexia endorsements.
Mrs. Burton is married to her husband, Mike, who retired from the United States Army. Together, they have seven children and five grandchildren.
Colleagues describe Mrs. Burton as a calming presence, a supportive teammate, and a dedicated educator who meets every student with patience, compassion, and high expectations. She is known for creating a welcoming environment where students feel valued and supported while encouraging both students and colleagues to grow and succeed. Her commitment to excellence and love for her students make a lasting impact throughout the school community.

Calhoun Primary School is proud to announce Mrs. Alexis Clifton as the 2026-2027 Staff Member of the Year.
Mrs. Alexis currently serves as the school nurse at Calhoun Primary School and is completing her first year in the role. A 2018 Calhoun High School graduate, she completed the CNA and Healthcare pathways before earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of West Georgia in 2022. Prior to joining CPS, she worked at West Georgia Gastroenterology.
Mrs. Alexis is married to Ross Clifton, a CMS teacher and basketball coach, and together they have a dog named Maverick.
Colleagues describe Mrs. Alexis as a calm, compassionate, and dependable presence for both students and staff. She is known for creating a welcoming environment where students feel safe, cared for, and supported while handling the fast-paced demands of the school clinic with professionalism and confidence. Her positive attitude, attention to detail, and willingness to step in wherever needed have made her an invaluable part of the CPS community.
