CALHOUN, GA — The Calhoun City Schools Board of Education held its October meeting on Monday evening, October 27, 2025, highlighted by moments of leadership recognition, heartfelt remembrance, and continued commitment to excellence.
The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by the Camo Crocodiles and Brown Bears from Calhoun Early Learning Academy (CELA), followed by an invocation delivered by kindergarten student Greer Lamb, granddaughter of Coach Lamb.
During the organizational portion of the meeting, the Board voted to appoint Becky Gilbert George as Board Chair, Andy Baxter as Vice Chair, and Rhoda Washington as Secretary.
Superintendent Dr. Michele Taylor announced that the Calhoun City Schools Board of Education has once again been recognized by the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) as an Exemplary Board, the highest level of distinction awarded by the organization. This marks another year in which Calhoun’s Board meets the rigorous standards of governance and accountability set by GSBA.
Dr. Taylor commended the Board for this achievement, noting the long-standing leadership and influence of Mr. Eddie Reeves, who faithfully served as Board Chair for the past decade.
“While we are honored as a governance team to receive this recognition, there will be a huge void without the presence of our leader and friend, Eddie Reeves,” said Dr. Taylor. “We know Eddie will be looking down and cheering for us as we continue to lead with the highest standards of excellence.”
The evening featured a special presentation from Georgia State Senator Chuck Payne, joined by Keith King, representing the Gordon County Board of Commissioners, who presented a resolution on behalf of the Georgia State Senate recognizing Mr. Reeves’ many years of dedicated service to Calhoun City Schools and the Calhoun-Gordon County community.
A time of reflection followed, allowing attendees to share personal and professional tributes in honor of Mr. Reeves. The outpouring of community support has been extraordinary for the Eddie Reeves Memorial Scholarship. This annual scholarship will recognize two Calhoun High School seniors—one in the arts and one in athletics—who demonstrate leadership and a heart for community service.
Under new business, the Board unanimously approved the naming of the Calhoun City Schools Boardroom as the “Eddie Reeves Boardroom.” Plans are underway to install commemorative signage in the Board of Education lobby as a lasting tribute to his servant leadership and contributions to the district.
Guests and family members were invited to share in fellowship and enjoy a spread of Eddie’s favorite treats—Chick-fil-A nuggets and sweet tea, peanut M&Ms, Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes, El Pueblito chips and salsa, and hot cider—reflecting the joy and warmth he brought to every gathering.
The evening concluded with a special musical tribute titled “You Beat Us Home,” written by Trace Vaughn with lyrics, music, and voice AI created in honor of Mr. Reeves. The song accompanied a slideshow of photos celebrating his years of service and legacy of excellence.
“Eddie’s impact continues to shine across our community and in our hearts,” said Dr. Taylor. “His leadership and love for Calhoun City Schools will forever be part of our tradition of excellence.”
