Hands-on lessons, powerful storytelling, and real-world training reinforce safe driving choices.
CALHOUN, GA – On Friday, November 21, 2025, Calhoun High School welcomed the Lutzie 43 Foundation for a full-day Safe Driving Summit that encouraged students to drive responsibly, make informed decisions, and recognize the impact their choices have on themselves and others.
The day opened with a warm welcome from Superintendent Dr. Michele Taylor, followed by remarks from Calhoun Police Chief Tony Pyle and several local emergency responders. Students then heard from Lutzie 43 Foundation Executive Director Mike Lutzenkirchen, who shared the moving story of his son Philip, a former student-athlete at Lassiter High School and Auburn University whose impact extended far beyond football. Known for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others, Philip was a beloved son, brother, and friend. His life was tragically cut short in a distracted driving crash in 2014, inspiring the creation of the Lutzie 43 Foundation. Mike’s message underscored the powerful reminder that safe choices behind the wheel matter and that Philip’s legacy continues to inspire positive change. He also introduced students to the nationally recognized 43 Key Seconds Safe Driving Initiative, encouraging them to take 43 seconds before every drive to pause, prepare, and commit to safe decisions.
Following the keynote, students participated in rotating breakout sessions led by trauma and rehab medical teams, local and statewide law enforcement officers, first responders, and trucking professionals. These hands-on sessions gave students a realistic look at the consequences of distracted and impaired driving, the importance of seatbelt use, proper following distance, reaction time, and the impact of vehicle blind spots on roadway safety. Students also explored a full-size semi-truck and experienced the driver’s vantage point firsthand.
During the midday break, students enjoyed a lunch sponsored by Courier Express, with assistance from CHS alumnus (’10) Josh White, who played a key role in coordinating the donation. Calhoun City Schools is thankful for their partnership and commitment to supporting student opportunities.
Calhoun High School Principal Dr. Allison Eubanks emphasized the value of the summit, noting that the goal was to provide students with meaningful, real-world learning that will protect them well beyond high school. “The Lutzie 43 Foundation message and the 43 Key Seconds safe driving initiative reinforce that their choices matter—not just for themselves, but for everyone around them.” The impact of the event was quickly felt in the community, as several parents reached out afterward to share how powerful the summit had been and to express their appreciation for bringing this experience to CHS students.
Calhoun City Schools extends its sincere appreciation to the Lutzie 43 Foundation, Courier Express, medical partners, trucking industry professionals, statewide and local law enforcement, emergency responders, and all agencies that contributed to this important day of learning. Their collaboration brought an invaluable message to our school community.
Students are also encouraged to explore the Lutzie 43 Foundation's Prepared for Life (PFL) Scholarship, which is designed for students who demonstrate strong character, leadership, and a commitment to safe driving. For more information, please visit www.lutzie43.org.
