Calhoun City Schools welcomed Atlanta Braves legend Dale Murphy to Calhoun High School on Wednesday morning as he presented scholarships to graduating seniors Daniela Sanchez and Kirk Wallin through the Dale Murphy Foundation Scholarship program.

The special presentation brought together students, staff, administrators, Board of Education members, and community guests to celebrate two student-athletes recognized not only for their accomplishments but also for their character, leadership, and commitment to serving others.

Superintendent Dr. Michele Taylor opened the event by welcoming guests and recognizing Hayden Brooks, a 1997 Calhoun High School graduate, Director of Operations at Purpose Possible, and proud member of the Dale Murphy Foundation Board of Directors, for helping bring the opportunity to Calhoun High School.

Superintendent, Dr. Michele Taylor, reflected on Murphy’s lasting impact both on and off the field, highlighting his legendary baseball career as an 18-season Major League Baseball player, seven-time All-Star, five-time Gold Glove winner, four-time Silver Slugger recipient, and back-to-back National League MVP with the Atlanta Braves.

“While he is a legend in baseball, he considers faith, family, and service his greatest accomplishments,” said Dr. Taylor during the welcome. “He believes the truest legacy is lifting others up.”

That spirit of service and encouragement was at the center of Wednesday’s presentation as Murphy honored Sanchez and Wallin for embodying those same values through their leadership, compassion, and positive impact within the Calhoun community.

A special thank you was also extended to Calhoun High School Counselor Kendra Arnold for coordinating and arranging the memorable scholarship presentation and visit for students and guests.

Members of the Calhoun High School Tennis and Calhoun High School Baseball teams were also in attendance to hear from the baseball legend before major postseason competitions this week. Murphy shared words of encouragement and well wishes as the Yellow Jacket tennis teams compete in the GHSA State Finals today, Wednesday, May 13, 2026 and Yellow Jacket baseball prepares for the Final Four tomorrow, Thursday, May 14, 2026.

It was a special day for the Jackets and a memorable opportunity for student-athletes to hear firsthand from one of baseball’s most respected leaders about the importance of faith, family, service, and using success to positively impact others.

Calhoun City Schools is proud to celebrate opportunities that inspire students to lead with purpose while continuing the district’s tradition of excellence in Academics, Arts, and Athletics.
