CALHOUN, GA — The Calhoun City Schools Board of Education met for its August 10, 2026, work session and unanimously agreed to name the Calhoun High School track in honor of legendary coach and educator Mr. R. Lynn Walter.
Coach Walter devoted more than six decades to the leadership, development, and success of Calhoun High School student-athletes. His remarkable career includes 30 years as head coach, along with more than 30 years of dedicated volunteer service to the track and cross-country programs.
Throughout his distinguished career, Coach Walter was named Georgia Cross Country Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Calhoun-Gordon County Sports Hall of Fame. He holds the distinction of being the only coach in Calhoun history to produce state champions in three different sports—track and field, cross country, and tennis.
Under his leadership, his teams captured 16 region championships, including an impressive 10 consecutive region titles. While his accomplishments on the track and field speak for themselves, Coach Walter's greatest legacy can be seen in the countless student-athletes whose lives he influenced through his commitment to athletics, leadership, discipline, and character.
Congratulations, Coach Walter, on a truly stellar career and an incredible legacy of service to Calhoun High School and our student-athletes. We are grateful for the countless lives you have impacted and the example you have set for generations of young people.
A dedication ceremony is being planned for Friday, October 2, 2026, during pre-game festivities at the Calhoun High School Homecoming game at Phil Reeve Stadium. Coach Walter will also be recognized during the upcoming track season, when permanent signage honoring his legacy will be unveiled.
Calhoun City Schools is proud to celebrate Coach Walter and the lasting impact he has made on our students, our athletic programs, and our community. His dedication and commitment have left an indelible mark on Calhoun High School.
