Calhoun High School cross country ran in the championship races at the OrthoWest Invitational in Carrollton on Saturday. Thousands of runners from across the state flocked to the race for a preview of the state championship course. Carolynn Dooley excelled with a time of 21:18 on the tough course. Freshman Demetrius Clavino was the top finisher for the Calhoun boys with a time of 17:13. Sophomore Xavier Hinojosa had a big day with a time of 18:10. Other strong performers and point scorers included Meleana Adcock, Beyonce Brito, Anthony Velazquez, Walker Hurd, Citlalli Vigil Jaimes, Sofia Carreto, and Kevin Jacobo. Joseph Jones, Robert Morales, Jullisa Bahena, and Daniella Sanchez all ran hard. The Jackets will race again on Saturday at the Wire2Wire Invitational in Cartersville. #GoJackets 🐝💨

Congratulations to CMS Cross Country on an outstanding race yesterday! We are thrilled to announce that both the boys' and girls' teams took first place and were crowned the Gordon County Champions for the second year in a row at Resaca Battlefield.
Sammy Hinojosa finished 1st with a time of 12:16, Dayman Perez finished 2nd with 12:22, Rolfi De Leon-Simon finished 3rd with 12:24, Orlando Aguilar finished 4th with a 12:43, Ethan Worley finished 9th with a 13:47, Price Startup finished 11th with a 13:59, and Justin Blanco finished 12th with a 14:11. On the girls' side, 6th grader Sloane Barasoain finished in 1st place with a time of 13:27, Kathryn Land finished 2nd with a 13:55, Olivia Moore finished 4th with a 15:22, Saira Medoza-Melger finished 5th with a 15:43, Jaiden Dobson finished 8th with a 16:32, Niobe Brito finished 9th with a 18:05, and Emma Grace Cook rounded out the top 7 in 16th place with a 21:33. The CMS cross country teams hit the ground running in their first race of the season on Saturday. The boys dashed into 2nd place among 23 teams, while the girls rocked a solid 6th place. Way to race to the finish line! Go Jackets!

Calhoun High School cross country swarmed on Saturday at the 31st Ridge Ferry Invitational along the banks of the Oostanaula River in Rome, Georgia. The boys finished 9th, while the girls placed 17th against competition from Northwest Georgia and Metro Atlanta. Freshman Demetrius Clavino set a freshman school record and secured a medal in his first official high school 5k with a 3rd place finish in a time of 16:15. Junior Carolynn Dooley set a PR of 21:08 and finished 19th to lead the girls.
Additional point earners for the boys included Xavier Hinojosa, Leyver Mendez, Anthony Velazquez, and Walker Hurd. Giulianna Lopez, Beyonce Brito, Citlalli Vigil Jaime, and Debora Lopez all scored for the girls. Israel Lopez, Riley Sutton, Sofia Carreto, and Daniella Sanchez also contributed to the varsity finish. The JV boys finished 6th and were led by Devon Dornan, Joseph Jones, Jason Adcock, Christopher Arnold, and Noah Schutz. The Jackets will run again in Carrollton at the OrthoWest Invitational on September 9th. Great job, Jackets and best of luck this season!

The Calhoun Middle School Lady Jackets opened the Canes Clash Tournament with a decisive 10-3 win over Woodland last night. Mori Henderson, Brayleigh Amos, and Marley Hall led the offensive attack with a combined 7 hits, and Lola Mitchell and Kinzley Kirby added 2 RBI each. Saydi Prokop pitched a great game, and the Jacket defense held strong behind her. The Lady Jackets are back in action in the tournament today as they take on Heritage at 10:30. Go Jackets! 🐝🥎

Congratulations to Calhoun High School alumna McCartney Kessler ('18) for receiving a wild card selection into the US Open Qualifying tennis tournament. After a standout prep career at Calhoun High School, McCartney attended the University of Florida, where she was a two-time All-American and the 2022 Southeastern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year. CHS XC swarmed on Thursday afternoon at the Rambler 2 Mile Tune Up against ten teams from across Georgia. The girls finished fourth overall and the boys finished third. Carolynn Dooley led the way for the Lady Jackets with a time of 13:04, which secured a 2nd place finish after a finish line battle for first. Freshman Demetrius Clavino won the overall race by almost twenty seconds with a course record time of 10:18. Xavier Hinojosa medaled with a 5th place finish in a time of 11:03. Meleana Adock, Giulianna Lopez, Maggie Malone, Beyonce Brito, Debora Lopez, and Citlalli Vigil Jaime had a big day for the Lady Jackets. Leyver Mendez, Anthony Valazquez, Walker Hurd, Israel Lopez, and Riley Sutton scored or contributed to the team finish. Middle schooler Kathryn Land competed at the JV level and ran the 4th fastest girl time of the day. The Jackets will race again next weekend at the Ridge Ferry Invitational in Rome, GA.
